The Mrs India Inc beauty pageant is under scrutiny as the Competition Commission of India (CCI) launches a detailed investigation into the organization following a former contestant's complaint. The complaint highlights allegedly onerous clauses, undisclosed costs, and restrictions on participants' professional choices in the agreements signed by contestants and winners. This development raises important questions about the fairness and transparency of beauty pageants and the potential abuse of market power by organizers.
The former contestant, Rinima Borah Agarwal, claims that Mrs India Inc imposed substantial financial burdens and restrictive conditions on participants. She paid a registration fee of Rs 3,000 and later chose a Premium Package for training and grooming, priced at Rs 6.75 lakh. After being declared first runner-up, she was presented with a separate winners' agreement demanding up to Rs 25 lakh for an international pageant in 2025. The agreement also barred her from participating in other beauty pageants for five years, limiting her professional opportunities.
The CCI's order flags several contractual clauses that raise concerns. These include prohibiting participants and winners from joining other beauty pageants for five years, requiring winners to obtain prior approval for professional engagements, mandating participation in social causes, and allowing the organizer to use participants' content for free publicity. The Commission also noted the delayed disclosure of terms and conditions, which could have impacted contestants' decisions.
The CCI's findings suggest a prima facie case of contravention of competition law. The organization's dominance in the niche market of beauty pageants for married women, due to its association with international pageants, is a significant factor. However, the CCI declined to accept the allegation of a cartel-like arrangement with international organizers, as no evidence was provided.
This investigation highlights the need for transparency and fairness in beauty pageants. The CCI's actions send a strong message that restrictive and exploitative practices will not be tolerated. As the investigation unfolds, it will be crucial to ensure that contestants' rights are protected and that beauty pageants remain a platform for empowerment and celebration, rather than a source of financial burden and professional constraints.
