Firstly, sponsors can receive priority review consideration for the Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) technical sections if both the finished drug product and its active ingredient(s) are manufactured in the US. Secondly, sponsors can include a second domestic source of active ingredient in the original submission, eliminating the need for a post-approval supplemental application. This approach provides manufacturers with more flexibility and helps safeguard supply continuity.
This pilot program is modeled on successful human-drug efforts, such as the ANDA Prioritization Pilot, and is part of a wider set of actions by the FDA to support and strengthen domestic drug manufacturing.
